France said on Thursday it may reimpose sanctions on Iran if two of its nationals, detained for more than three years, are not released following new charges of espionage. Iranian authorities this week confirmed that Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been indicted for spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, conspiracy to overthrow the regime, and “corruption on earth”—a capital offense under Iranian law. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the charges were “totally unjustified and baseless” if confirmed, and repeated France’s demand for their immediate release.
